Broadband XL Connection

Can I setup a network for my Broadband XL connection?

Broadband XL service is provided by Fiber to the Home technology with optical fiber carrying the voice and data to the ONT (Optical Network Termination) installed on the outside of your home. For data connections, an Ethernet (Cat 5) wire is connected to the ONT and runs into your home. nTelos can install an Ethernet connection if you do not already have Ethernet in your home. nTelos can also use coax wiring with Ethernet to coax converters to provide an Ethernet connection to your computer or router.

Broadband XL Internet Access for Multiple Computers
Broadband XL is available for use with multiple computers. nTelos provides the Ethernet data line but does not provide the networking equipment or routers. The following information is intended as general reference for nTelos Broadband XL customers. It is not intended as a detailed template on how to connect a Local Area Network (LAN). If you need assistance with connecting your Broadband XL data line into a network, please contact a Local Area Network support provider or retail computer store.

Using Broadband XL with an Ethernet Hub or Switch
Broadband XL can be connected to multiple computers by use of an Ethernet Hub or Ethernet Switch. This solution does not provide any routing capability and does not include any enhanced security features.

Using Broadband XL with a Router
For many customers who require Internet access for multiple computers, installing a gateway router on their network will provide a versatile solution for Internet access.

Today, inexpensive routers allow a customer to use a network numbering scheme called Network Address Translation or NAT. This is where a routable or static IP is given to a router (on the connection side of the router) and the router will then hand private or non-routable IP's to the users of a network (on the Local Area Network side of the router). There are numerous variations and combinations possible that allow a user to host web and mail servers, host FTP servers and serve multiple users with just a few IP addresses.

nTelos provides service that can be used with Local Area Networked (LAN) systems but does not provide LAN support beyond the Broadband XL connection. This information is provided as a service to our customers, but for additional assistance on Local Area Networking, please contact a local resource for computer and networking products.
